Adderall Depression – Is There A Link?

A combination of dextroamphetamine and amphetamine salts goes into the making of the drug called Adderall. This medication is primarily used to treat ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Another condition that it is prescribed in is narcolepsy. There are two variations of the drug. One is the extended-release or XR and the other is instant release or IR. Depending on the condition of the patient and requirement of the ailment, the doctor will prescribe one type or the other. The drug has resulted in reducing a large portion of the symptoms associated with ADHD but it does have quite a few side-effects.

Depression is said to be one of the ailments that Adderall can help with. Depression can be caused, otherwise, by many reasons. Clinical depression however is rather serious and can even be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. The National Institute of Mental Health states that almost 15 million adults in America go through major depression. The symptoms of depression may vary from person to person but can go up to be as serious as making them suicidal. One of the ways in which such symptoms can be reduced is with Adderall. Admittedly, this is certainly not one of the main uses of this medication.

There is something known as atypical depression which may not respond very well to conventional modes of treatment. Some of the symptoms of this type of depression are a sense of lethargy, difficulty falling asleep, eating disorders and most often overeating and a heightened sense of being irritated with most things in life. Unfortunately this type of depression works in a vicious cycle. The more the sense of lethargy and a sense of hopelessness a depressed person feels the more depressed he gets. Adderall in this circumstance acts as a stimulant that can help with deficit disorder.

Earlier, the topic of Adderall and narcolepsy was touched upon. Narcolepsy often shows up as sluggishness during the daytime and even when an individual feels sleepy all of a sudden. With the right dosage of Adderall, such an individual can enjoy a boost of energy and this goes a long way in helping him fight off depression. One point of caution to be reiterated here is that Adderall is not a typical antidepressant. Doctors who prescribed Adderall depression medicine should also monitor the patient extremely carefully for various reasons. One of them is the patient developing a higher endurance for Adderall which may lead his body to seek a higher dosage of the same.
