Buying A Forklift

So you are in the exciting market for a forklift but how should you go about buying one?  As awesome as forklifts are they are not exactly something that we can buy based off of common sense.  Buying a forklift is a tough job.  It is pretty much like buying a car except it is a forklift.

There are a plethora of ways you can pay for the use of a forklift.  New, used, lease, rent or any other way you could possibly get one into your possession.  But before you do anything you need to think about what forklift would do the job for you.

What to Look For

How heavy will the things you be lifting be?  How often will you be lifting these things?  Do your things come in pallets or can they only be picked up delicately?  Will you be lifting things from high up or off the ground?

Forklift names pretty much explain exactly how the forklift functions.  With names such as stand-up rider, pallet jack, sit down rider, reach forklift and stand-up reach rider you can guess how forklifts operate.

Now you have to take into account how much you are willing to pay for a forklift.  If you are only going to use it for a short period of time then it is best to probably rent one.  But if you are planning on breaking it in for a while then a new or used one will be the way to go.

Keep in mind too that buying a forklift is just like buying a car.  It depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot.  That means if you buy a used forklift that you could save yourself a boat load of money versus buying a new forklift.  Just because there are scuffs on the tires does not mean the forklift is rendered obsolete.  It can still get the job done.

Dig Deep

A place you might not think to look for as used forklift for sale would be a company that rents and leases forklifts.  Companies that do only leases and rentals get a new fleet of forklifts in on a regularly scheduled basis.  When the new forklifts come in to be rented or leased the company sometimes has the option to either sell some of the forklifts or send them all back to the manufacturer.

Some manufacturers allow these rental companies to sell forklifts and some do not allow it.  But it is worth a phone call.  These forklifts are usually the most used but still in very good condition.  The forklift rental company kept the forklifts in good condition so that they could keep renting them out to people and please their manufacturer when they send them back.

Do some research on the brands of forklifts and what their reputations are as well.  You would spend more money on a used BMW than you would on a used Hyundai.  The same principle goes for forklifts.

You can also ask to review a forklifts maintenance records.  A forklift has many moving parts and you do not always know if you are seeing what you think you are.  Even if the forklift looks perfect there might be a problem with the brake pad that you are not able to see.  The forklift should have an especially diligent maintenance record behind it if it belonged to a rental or leasing company as they have to keep one on record so they know who to charge if the forklift is returned with damages to it.

Keep these tips in the back of your mind whether you are buying your first forklift or are buying a whole brand new fleet.
