Parkinson’s disease is a neurologically degenerative condition which affects 1 in 500 people in the UK – a total of 127,000. Men are 1.5 times more likely to develop symptoms of Parkinson ’s disease and the average age that a diagnosis takes place, confirming the condition, is 60. However, 1 in 20 cases develop in people under 50.

It’s caused by the death of nerve cells in the substantia nigra and a reduction of dopamine levels in the brain. Dopamine regulates movement – that’s why Parkinson’s sufferers struggle with movement especially.

No-one knows why the loss of nerve cells occurs, but many experts suggest that it is to do with environment and genetic factors. Living in a toxic environment can increase your chances of developing Parkinson’s disease.

Recent studies have shown that red wine could help mitigate the brain damage caused by Parkinson’s disease, thanks to an antioxidant present in the skin of dark grapes – resveratrol.

When tested on animals, there was a significant reduction in brain damage within two weeks of treatment. Improved co-ordination and mobility was reported when Parkinson’s suffering rats were treated with resveratrol. The depletion of dopamine was also halted. Many studies have attributed the protection of cell damage to the antioxidant, resveratrol.


Of course, any Parkinson’s patients should consult their doctor before adding the regular consumption of red wine to their diet. Alcohol often reacts poorly with high doses of medication, so it may not be prudent to open a bottle. Get medical advice first!

It’s also important to remember that no-one should drink more than the recommended daily amount of red wine. This is a daily five ounce glass for women, and two for men. When consumed to excess, the health benefits of red wine are reversed and it becomes harmful to your body.
