Major Steps To Help Prevent Cavities

No one wants to have cavities, and everyone knows that cavities require a trip to the dentist. There are several reasons that individuals obtain cavities. It is important to know what you can do to avoid cavities. Below are five things that will help avoid the risk of cavities.

Regular Visits to the Dentist
One of the best ways to detect cavity formation early on is by visiting your dental office on a regular basis. The cleanings they provide keep your teeth free from plaque and calculus which are two major causes of tooth decay. Visiting your dental office two times a year is necessary to keep the risk of cavities to a minimum. For people who have a higher risk of getting cavities, three or four visits a year are preferred.

Brushing With Fluoride
When you brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste, you get rid of the harmful bacteria, food or other morsels that can cause decay on the tooth surface, enamel and dental crevices. Toothpaste containing fluoride will help strengthen the tooth structure as well as keeping bacteria from creating acids that cause tooth decay. Dental offices usually recommend that patients use toothpaste with fluoride in it.

Avoid Drinking and Eating Fermentable Carbohydrates
Foods that are loaded up with lots of sugar are called fermentable carbohydrates. These foods will put a person at a much higher risk of getting cavities. This is because fermentable carbohydrates contain elements in them that stay on the teeth for long periods of time. An example of this would be raisins. Although this sugary food is great for the body, they are horrible for teeth and tend to stick around on the teeth as opposed to other kinds of food and snacks.

Rinsing After Eating
If you do eat or drink foods that contain lots of sugars, make sure you rinse your mouth will cold water soon thereafter. The reason that you need to rinse is because you want the excess sugar to come off of your teeth as soon as possible. A good example of it being bad not to rinse after these sugary foods is comparable to a baby with their milk bottle in their mouth all night long. This process has the baby sleeping in bed with fermentable sugars covering their teeth for about 8 hours a night. When this happens, the baby will be at a much higher risk of getting cavities.

Drinking Fluoridated Water
There is a positive effect on the teeth when drinking the free fluoride that comes through your sink from the city waters. Drink as much fluoridated water as you can to help your teeth remain healthy. Water is also free of sugar which makes it one of the best liquids you can drink for healthy teeth.

By following all of the tips above and practicing these good oral techniques, your teeth will have a better chance of being cavity free. Cavities and dental work can cost you thousands of dollars that might be prevented with better oral care habits. If you are not currently visiting your dental office on a regular basis, now is the time to make that appointment and take better care of your teeth and health.
