Save The Planet, One Vacation At A Time

Who ever said that a vacation has to involve lounging on a white-sand beach sipping on a brightly colored cocktail? The truth is that vacations can be comprised of so many things from relaxing activities to something that will make more of an impact on your life such as partaking in Costa Rica ecotourism. There are many ways that you can have a thoroughly enjoyable vacation without leaving a massive carbon footprint, making your vacation both exciting and environmentally conscious.

What is Ecotourism?

According to the International Ecotourism Society, ecotourism is a way of traveling that is responsible to preserved, natural areas with the objective of conserving the environment while improving the wellbeing of the local people. It is essentially travelling with the principals of providing positive affects on the environment, culture, and finances of a given area.

Costa Rica’s Planet-Friendly Activities
Ecotourism has been a popular choice for environmentalists for years, and it involves traveling to areas that have largely been unaffected by human impacts, according to the International Ecotourism Society. Sometimes, ecotourism includes volunteering your time and talents to help keep areas preserved and thriving, but does not always need to involve good works efforts. Simply traveling to resorts or to communities where the money you are spending will go to stimulating the economy of these environmentally minded areas will also make a large impact.

The International Ecotourism Society explains that the basic principals of ecotourism include:

–          Having the smallest impact possible on the natural landscape of the area

–          Building respect and recognition of the environment

–          Directly providing financial assistance for conservation and to the local peoples

In Costa Rica there are both ecotourism options that include volunteering as well as hotels and resorts that keep these principals in mind. These resorts make every effort they can to reduce waste and preserve resources and energy. For example, some resorts offer dormitory-style bathrooms where you share it with other guests—this greatly reduces water and electricity waste. Even small gestures such as serving drinks from large pitchers rather than opening many, small containers will help to reduce waste and thus will make a positive impact on the environment.

Why Choose Ecotourism?
Sometimes, when we go on vacation, we may feel guilty for indulging. Ecotourism provided the added knowledge that while you may be taking a break from the stresses of your everyday life, you are having a positive impact on the area you are visiting. The ecotourism in Costa Rica has been around for years, and is a great option for anyone looking to work towards something more than a great tan on their next vacation.
