The Top Red Carpet Dresses Of 2012

Whenever there’s an awards ceremony, a film premiere of some kind of special concert, all eyes are on the dresses worn on the red carpet. Of course I’m interested to know who won the Oscar for best actress, but what I really study are the gorgeous gowns worn by celebs.

These events are a chance for designers to show off their very best creations – and for stars to fulfil all their fashion dreams. So, here’s my list of the best red carpet dresses of 2012.

Diane Kruger at Cannes

Christian Dior Couture

While a lot of celebrities go for glitz and sparkle at red carpet events, Diane Kruger proved why she is one of the most fashionable women in the world when she stepped out in a couture Christian Dior gown that channelled Victorian hooped skirts and vintage fabrics. Understated and beautiful.

Katy Perry at the Grammy Awards

Elie Saab

We’re used to seeing Katy Perry in quirky outfits and colourful stage costumes. At the Grammys she transformed into a picture of elegance in a baby blue Elie Saab gown that matched her new blue hair. With a scooped neckline and a gentle train it was stylish, pretty and glamorous.

Emma Stone at the Golden Globe Awards

Lanvin

Emma Stone really made her mark on the fashion world (as well as the film industry) in 2012. At the Golden Globes she stepped out in a stunning deep burgundy Lanvin gown with a plunging V-neck and detailing on the shoulders and waist. It complemented her pale skin beautifully.

Rita Ora at the British Fashion Awards

Vivienne Westwood

Usually she’s seen sporting edgy, urban designs, but for the British Fashion Awards singer Rita Ora stepped out in a stunning icy blue Vivienne Westwood gown. A diamond necklace and old-school Hollywood waves finished off the look perfectly.

Jessica Biel at the Total Recall premiere

Giambattista Valli Couture

Proving red carpet dresses don’t have to be long and flowing, actress Jessica Biel wore a white knee-length Giambattista Valli Couture dress that featured everything from a mannish collar and tuxedo shirt front, to lace sleeves and a feathered peplum. Beautiful and interesting.

Keira Knightley at the Anna Karenina LA premiere

Erdem

Keira Knightley rarely puts a foot wrong when it comes to red carpet glamour and she upped the fashion stakes when she stepped out in this gorgeous mint green bandeau dress with blue lace floral embroidery.

Karolina Kurkova at the Met Gala

Rachel Zoe

Proving doing something different sometimes pays off, Karolina Kurkova stepped out in an incredible long-sleeved rose-gold sequined gown at the annual New York Met Gala. It was backless, it had a train and it came with a matching turban. Amazing.

Angelababy at the Beijing International Film Festival

Barney Cheng

There’s only one word to describe the dress worn by Hong Kong model Angelababy earlier this year – princess. A beautiful jewelled bodice complemented a huge tulle gall gown skirt. There’s nothing more to say.

Gwyneth Paltrow at the Oscars

Tom Ford

Gwyneth Paltrow is known for her simple elegance and she nailed this look with a stunning white Tom Ford one-shouldered column dress with matching white cape at the Oscars. The dress was complemented by a dramatic silver cuff and a huge ring – and boy did it look good. Proving that you don’t need sequins to look incredible.

Kate Middleton at the ‘Our Greatest Team Rises – BOA Olympic Concert’

Jenny Packham

Kate Middleton has long been a fan of Jenny Packham but at this special Olympic event, she stepped out in probably her best dress ever. The beautiful jade green gown featured a loose, pleated skirt that was full of movement, lace cap sleeves, a plunging V neck and a nipped in waist. A dress worthy of a queen-to-be.
