The use of Ozone (O3) to purify water has been around since the early 1900’s, when European scientists employed this method to sterilise well or spring water supplies. As time passed, the practice of using ozone to disinfect surface water became more-&-more widespread. During the early 40’s – Ozone water treatment became the principal method used to sanitise and decontaminate major water supplies in Switzerland, France and certain parts of Germany. Ozone is molecularly composed of 3 oxygen atoms, while the oxygen we breathe is made from only 2 oxygen atoms. One of these 3 oxygen atoms that ozone id composed of – transfers electrons between substances. These other substances might be bacteria and/or viruses that are found in untreated water. A single oxygen atom then bonds with other foreign substance in the water, which causes oxidization to occur. The process of oxidation destroys any viruses, bacteria and any other type water contaminants. Once the process is concluded, the only by-product that remains is a single oxygen atom.
Ozone water purification systems disinfect water by producing Ozone in a special ozone generator. These generators create Ozone by using UV light (Ultraviolet), electricity and compressed air. The high-intensity UV light then transforms the compressed air into Ozone. This newly created Ozone is directed into a water supply by means of a dispersal line, which turns it the ozone into tiny bubbles. All the impurities in the water are then oxidized and obliterated by the Ozone bubbles, which creates safe drinkable water.
Most of the bottled water people drink nowadays is usually treated with Ozone. On the whole, Ozone treatment enhances the appearance, taste and odour of our drinking water. Additionally, it prevents ‘hard-water’ problems by ceasing scale deposits to from in water pipes.
The Ozone water purification process is also used to disinfect wastewater and contaminated ground water before it is sent back into the environment. Ozone is also employed as an anti- bacterial substance for the treatment, processing and storage of foods.
