When it comes to eating healthy, most people know that yogurt is a great choice for snacking. Yogurt is full of calcium and other important vitamins and minerals that are great for weight loss and having a healthy immune system, among other benefits.

But along with the more well known benefits of yogurt, there are a few additional benefits of the tasty treat that most people don’t know. The following are three health benefits of yogurt.

1. Yogurt can help you get that flat stomach.
If you’re not rocking some hardcore abs, don’t worry. Yogurt can actually help you achieve a flatter and stronger stomach. If you consume 18 ounces of yogurt every day and cut down your total calorie intake, you could end up dropping a jean size. In fact, eating yogurt will help you lose 81% more belly fat than not eating snacks.

A study by the University of Tennessee found that when you have belly fat, it produces a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol then tells your body to start collecting more fat, and this can give you an increase in belly fat. When you eat yogurt, though, the calcium tells your body to stop producing the cortisol, allowing you to cut down on the belly fat.

2. Yogurt can help control high blood pressure.
When most people think about the health benefits of yogurt, they tend to think of only the health benefits related to weight loss, but yogurt can be beneficial to ward off high blood pressure. Most people tend to eat way more salt than they should, and too much salt can end up leading to heart disease and high blood pressure. Yogurt can help combat this. The potassium found in yogurt can work against the added sodium and help to flush it out of your system. A study found in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that adults who ate at least two servings of dairy per day were 54% less likely to develop high blood pressure.

3. Yogurt can be that sweet treat that benefits your smile.
Some people think that since yogurt is sweet, the sugars must be bad for their teeth and cause cavities and tooth decay. They’re wrong. The fruits found inside yogurt do not penetrate or erode tooth enamel, therefore, they don’t cause tooth decay or cavities. A study also found that yogurt actually helps protect gums, and people who eat at least one serving of yogurt per day are 60% less likely to suffer from dental diseases.

So whether you want to cut belly fat, alleviate your risk of high blood pressure or even enjoy a sweet treat without worrying about tooth decay, yogurt is your answer. There are plenty of different yogurt brands and flavors out there that you will certainly be able to find one that you enjoy.
